A man stabbed his partner to death because he thought she was having an affair with her brother-in-law, a court has heard.
Jaici Rocha, 37, is accused of slashing Karina Batista’s throat and heart at their home in Bristol.
Rocha was convinced Karina, 40, was cheating on him with her sister’s husband, a court was told.
Rocha, who is originally from Brazil, denies murder after Karina’s body was found hidden under bedding at their rented flat on February 13, last year.
Karina was stabbed in her face and neck through the bedding on a mattress, the court heard.
The couple came to the UK in 2016, where Karina has a sister, and moved into the property in Easton, Bristol.
Karina became frightened of Rocha and moved out for a short time, but she eventually returned to live with him.
Rocha washed cars and delivered food for a living, and claimed to have a recording of Karina with the secret lover.
Bristol Crown Court was shown CCTV footage of a night in February last year when Rocha was out on a motorcycle, heading home after food deliveries, followed by Karina driving a red Peugeot car.
They drove down several roads before reaching their home, where Rocha allegedly launched the violent attack.
Paul Dunkels QC, prosecuting, said Rocha ‘had no settled plan’ after he attacked Karina and assured the jury that they would not see ‘unsettling images’ of the alleged murder victim.
Blood splatter can be seen on photos of the walls surrounding the mattress.
Rocha used Karina’s phone to WhatsApp a relative in Brazil after the incident, writing ‘Answer, it is urgent’, the jury was told.
The jury was also shown CCTV capturing Rocha’s early morning car journey.
He left the property at 1.47am and withdrew £250 from Karina’s bank account, before driving off in her red Peugeot.
Shortly before 6.30am, Rocha drove to a mental health facility and stayed in the car park for two hours, the Bristol Post reports.
He eventually walked inside and a nurse reportedly found him crying and foaming at the mouth.
Police later visited his flat and found Karina’s body.
The trial continues.
