After Stephen Hawking’s passing today we’ve been remembering his life and many admirable achievements.
His wonderful family was a big part of the physicists life, and his first marriage to Jane Wilde was seen by the world in the biopic The Theory of Everything.
Stephen and Jane had three children together: Lucy, Robert, and Tim.
Lucy has been the child who’s mostly in the spotlight, as she has written a number of books (including George’s Secret Key to the Universe which she co-wrote with her father).
Robert and Tim tend to be less prominent in the media, however.
Robert was born in May 1967.
As a child, he helped his mother take care of his dad, as Stephen’s Motor Neurone Disease rapidly worsened.
Jane Wilde said of Robert in her biography, ‘he had to do things for his father that children really shouldn’t have to do.’
Reports say that as a child Robert aspired to be a scientist. However, he ended up following a different path, and instead chose to become a software engineer, studying at the University of Oxford.
The 50-year-old spent some time living in Canada, but now resides in Seattle, US, where he works for Microsoft.
Robert is married, and has a son and daughter.
Tim is the youngest Hawking child and was born in April 1979.
His early relationship with his father was strained due to Stephen’s difficulty communicating. However, eventually this improved and they became close.
They’d play chess and watch Formula One together.
Tim also revealed in a documentary about the physicist that he’d play pranks on his dad, programming swear words into his voice synthesiser computer and playing pranks on him.
There was some discussion over whether Hawking was Tim’s father, as it was suspected that it may have been Jonathan Hellyer, Jane’s lover as her marriage to Stephen faltered.
However, in her memoir, Jane says that she told her mother-in-law that Steven was definitely the father.
Tim graduated in Spanish and French language from the University of Exeter and also studies at the University of Birmingham.
He’s currently working for a famous toy firm LEGO as a loyalty executive.
