First million-dollar winner Chasing ‘dream’ final berth again


Peter Lagogiane insists it would be a "dream" just to make another Million Dollar Chase final after Greyhound Racing NSW announced a renewed focus on regional qualifiers at the launch of the world's richest canine series.

Lagogiane, who danced down the Wentworth Park straight after he won last year's inaugural $1 million-to-the-winner final with Mystic Riot, is preparing the bitch to feature in this year's heats alongside the speedy Federal Lilly and Beast Unleashed.

"Every time we see the clip and the post-race interview it brings a tear to our eyes," said Lagogiane, who trains in conjunction with his wife Jodie. "We were in Dubai and I came home because dad was sick. We were on a million-dollar contract over there and had to can it.

"Somebody said to me, 'Pete, that's God working in mysterious ways. You didn't earn that million in Dubai, but you came back and won the million-dollar race'. I don't necessarily look at it like that, but maybe it's a fair way to look at it.


"It was an emotional rollercoaster in the lead-up and to know you are at the top of your game was very fulfilling. Our kids have got a future and we've got a future in the industry [now]. If we could make another final that would be a dream."

More than $2 million in prizemoney will be offered throughout the series, which will culminate in a final at Wentworth Park on October 18 – just one day before thoroughbred racing's $14 million The Everest at Randwick.
